I had to do it... after all, what's a list of 52 books without a zombie adventure thrown it? And it's not your typical zombie apocalypse. Here's what week 6's book, Beef with the Apocalypse, is all about: When Azari Yue wakes up in her Edmonton apartment on a Wednesday in July, she never imagines it will be the last normal day she does so. But screams bring her running into the hallway to confront a terrible scene: dogs savaging their owners, and bodies lying on the streets. She locks herself into her place and tries to call 911, but all the lines are occupied and she can’t get through. The news tells a terrible story of animals dropping to the ground en masse, and then reawakening and turning suddenly feral with no explanation. But it’s when reports start coming in from the rest of the country about cattle, horses, and other domesticated animals reacting the same as the dogs, she realizes that she’s not in Kansas anymore and Toto isn’t her best friend. The airwaves are filled with speculation of a biological attack, but it’s pretty clear that no matter the origin, the zombie apocalypse has come for the animals. It’s now become a race against the clock to find out how and why, in order for the government to come up with a solution. But time’s running out as the country’s social infrastructure crumbles in the aftermath of mass casualties, and people become afraid to leave their homes to keep the world running as normal, Azari realizes that she can’t just sit in the city while wild packs of dogs roam the street, killing everyone they encounter. She’s got to find a safe haven for herself and a few people she meets along the way. On the radio, she hears about a sanctuary established in the north of the province, but is it just a pipe dream to try and get there before she also falls victim to the savage dead? Okay, got off to a bit of late start because the cat was in my face at 5 a.m. and I've been a bit sluggish since then. But now that this post is up, I'm off to write! Have a great week, everyone. See you on Sunday with an excerpt. Did Balima and Kent get together at the end of my new paranormal romance novel Phantom Crush? Well... you might just have to read it and see what happens. After all, how can a ghost and a living person have an actual romance? 😉 I'm so excited to have passed the 1-month mark with Author Versus AI. Only 11 months to go! (Yay... LOL.) But it means that I'm cooking right along so far. Here's a video of me reading about the moment that Kent and Balima meet face-to-face after several near-misses. And it's not exactly what either of them expected. There's a couple more chapters for me to finish off in the book before I type "The End," so I'm off to type! Next week, I'll be sticking to the dead characters theme, but in an exciting new direction. Stay tuned! Until then, have a great weekend. Monday, May 20 --- 4,250 words Tuesday, May 21 --- 3,273 words Wednesday, May 22 --- 5,851 words Thursday, May 23 --- 7,677 (1 month mark!) Friday, May 24 --- 6,327 words Saturday, May 25 --- 5,623 words Sunday, May 26 --- 7,002 words TOTAL words for Week 5 --- 40,003 words This week, I'm about to cross the 1-month mark for my project, which is pretty exciting. And I'm going to do it with a paranormal romance called Phantom Crush. Here's what it's about: Balima has long loved Kent Woodhouse, one of the 1940s black-and-white movie stars who died of a drug overdose in the middle of a promising career. When Kent’s so-called “haunted” house goes up for sale right after Balima gets an unexpected windfall, she decides to move across the country to North Carolina and buy it. Her plan is to turn the house into a museum. She doesn’t really believe in ghosts, no matter what the realtor tells her. So, imagine her surprise to come face-to-face with her long-lost idol—she’s completely thrilled! Kent’s ghost, however, is anything but pleasant. He tries to run her off several times, but she’s as stubborn as they come and refuses to leave. Slowly, as they start to get to know each other, she realizes from what he says that he didn’t OD, as the newspapers reported at the time—he was murdered. When a long-lost relative of Kent’s shows up unexpectedly and challenges Balima’s right to the property, she’s caught by surprise when it turns out he might have a legitimate claim. Can Balima solve the mystery of Kent’s death and give peace to the ghost she loves before she loses the house—or will she fail and Kent will be stuck as a ghost for eternity? Okay, there's a lot of words that need to get written this week - I'll be back on Sunday to let you know how I'm doing with it. See you in a week! It's so much fun to type "The End" each week! I just crossed the 40k word count for General Purpose Hero and I'll be posting my final wordcount down below - I have one more chapter to add before I'm done, but I should be able to get that out in the next hour or so. Here's a video of me reading an excerpt from the prologue of the story. So, here's a question for you - what do you think of prologues in a book? I've used them in some of my novels and not in others, so I'm pretty much 50/50. If you have an opinion, please feel free to drop it down below. Would love to hear if you love them or hate them... and why. Okay, off to type up the last few words! Next week, I'm going to delve into a supernatural romance that will be a LOT of fun to write. Stay tuned! Until then, have a great Sunday. Monday, May 13 --- 3,500 words Tuesday, May 14 --- 4,327 words Wednesday, May 15 --- 6,140 words Thursday, May 16 --- 4,172 words Friday, May 17 --- 5,499 words Saturday, May 18 --- 8,360 words Sunday, May 19 --- 10,054 words TOTAL words for Week 4 --- 42,052 words ![]() I'm very excited about this week's sci-fi story, which is about a superhero and a robot. The working title is General Purpose Hero, and here's what it's about: After the AI arms race of the first half of the century, and the ensuing chaos and fallout from unscrupulous underworld elements, there’s been a moratorium on advanced AI. The only good robots are dim bulbs. Bad robots are bright lights. The point is to never confuse the two—or so the saying goes, at least in tech circles. Adequate is… adequate enough. In 2075, Colla is one of millions of General Purpose Collaborative (GPC) Robots in operation, all of which definitely fall in the “dim bulb” category of the field. Nearly every household has a GPC—some have several. They do what they’re told to do by their owners; no more, no less. But Colla has been purchased by a unique household—that of the reclusive tech wizard Koji Kono. He reprograms it to help him with his long-held dream to become a superhero. Colla’s to be his sidekick and backup to protect him. His reprogramming brings a lot of things to the surface, not least of which is a platonic and intense caring for its creator, Koji. After some initial success, the masked and anonymous Koji is feeling on top of the world. But when criminal kingpins in Toronto catch a relatively green Koji by surprise, all of his technology won’t save his very frail, human body. Colla is in danger of being discovered as more than the sum of its parts if its owner’s death comes to light. So, it secretly dons the costume and takes on Koji’s role as the protector of Toronto. I'll be back in a week to let you know how the writing is going. Hope everyone had a great Mother's Day yesterday, and see you in a week! And I'm still rolling along - just finished writing The Wreakfast Club and I'll be posting my final wordcount down below. Stheno was a really fun character to write, so who knows? I might revisit her world and her adventures next year when I'm looking for more books to write. But for now, I'll have to bid her farewell. Here's a video of me reading an excerpt from Chapter 1 of the story, and you can hear that the story starts out with a bang: Tomorrow, I'll be starting out my day NOT with writing, but by joining host Aimee Ravichandran and her co-hosts Russell Little and Valerie Sweeten on Author Talk. Watch it live here or catch it later or on any streaming channel. See you tomorrow! The number one question I get is: “How the heck do you write a book a week?” So, I’m going to be sharing tips and tricks about how I’m doing it, and how you can too. Check out my Writing Tips page for short videos covering a wide range of topics, from how to get started, all the way to what to do with your book when you've finished. First topic this week is how to find a genre that you’re comfortable writing in. This will be permanently posted on my Writing Tips page, but here's the video down below, just to make it easy to see: Hope my writing tips are inspiring you to get started on your own book. Happy writing! |
