It's so much fun to type "The End" each week! I just crossed the 40k word count for General Purpose Hero and I'll be posting my final wordcount down below - I have one more chapter to add before I'm done, but I should be able to get that out in the next hour or so. Here's a video of me reading an excerpt from the prologue of the story. So, here's a question for you - what do you think of prologues in a book? I've used them in some of my novels and not in others, so I'm pretty much 50/50. If you have an opinion, please feel free to drop it down below. Would love to hear if you love them or hate them... and why. Okay, off to type up the last few words! Next week, I'm going to delve into a supernatural romance that will be a LOT of fun to write. Stay tuned! Until then, have a great Sunday.

Monday, May 13 --- 3,500 words Tuesday, May 14 --- 4,327 words Wednesday, May 15 --- 6,140 words Thursday, May 16 --- 4,172 words Friday, May 17 --- 5,499 words Saturday, May 18 --- 8,360 words Sunday, May 19 --- TOTAL words for Week 4 --- I'm very excited about this week's sci-fi story, which is about a superhero and a robot. The working title is General Purpose Hero, and here's what it's about: After the AI arms race of the first half of the century, and the ensuing chaos and fallout from unscrupulous underworld elements, there’s been a moratorium on advanced AI. The only good robots are dim bulbs. Bad robots are bright lights. The point is to never confuse the two—or so the saying goes, at least in tech circles. Adequate is… adequate enough. In 2075, Colla is one of millions of General Purpose Collaborative (GPC) Robots in operation, all of which definitely fall in the “dim bulb” category of the field. Nearly every household has a GPC—some have several. They do what they’re told to do by their owners; no more, no less. But Colla has been purchased by a unique household—that of the reclusive tech wizard Koji Kono. He reprograms it to help him with his long-held dream to become a superhero. Colla’s to be his sidekick and backup to protect him. His reprogramming brings a lot of things to the surface, not least of which is a platonic and intense caring for its creator, Koji. After some initial success, the masked and anonymous Koji is feeling on top of the world. But when criminal kingpins in Toronto catch a relatively green Koji by surprise, all of his technology won’t save his very frail, human body. Colla is in danger of being discovered as more than the sum of its parts if its owner’s death comes to light. So, it secretly dons the costume and takes on Koji’s role as the protector of Toronto. I'll be back in a week to let you know how the writing is going. Hope everyone had a great Mother's Day yesterday, and see you in a week! And I'm still rolling along - just finished writing The Wreakfast Club and I'll be posting my final wordcount down below. Stheno was a really fun character to write, so who knows? I might revisit her world and her adventures next year when I'm looking for more books to write. But for now, I'll have to bid her farewell. Here's a video of me reading an excerpt from Chapter 1 of the story, and you can hear that the story starts out with a bang: Tomorrow, I'll be starting out my day NOT with writing, but by joining host Aimee Ravichandran and her co-hosts Russell Little and Valerie Sweeten on Author Talk. Watch it live here or catch it later or on any streaming channel. See you tomorrow! The number one question I get is: “How the heck do you write a book a week?” So, I’m going to be sharing tips and tricks about how I’m doing it, and how you can too. Check out my Writing Tips page for short videos covering a wide range of topics, from how to get started, all the way to what to do with your book when you've finished. First topic this week is how to find a genre that you’re comfortable writing in. This will be permanently posted on my Writing Tips page, but here's the video down below, just to make it easy to see: Hope my writing tips are inspiring you to get started on your own book. Happy writing! Monday, May 6 --- 4,579 words Tuesday, May 7 --- 5,021 words Wednesday, May 8 --- 5,001 words Thursday, May 9 --- 3,986 words Friday, May 10 --- 9,756 words Saturday, May 11 --- 4,801 words Sunday, May 12 --- 8,566 words TOTAL words for Week 3 --- 41,710 words This week, I'm diving back into my fantasy caper world with book 2 of Stheno's adventures. Another 40,000 words, here we come! Here's the description of the series itself: All the unusual villainous creatures of mythology band together Ocean’s Eleven style to steal something from the “good guys.” Golems, goblins, gorgons, harpies, banshees, zombies, etc. Each one possesses a unique skill that helps them have a fighting chance against the so-called heroes. And what the second book's about, which has the working title of The Wreakfast Club. After escaping the hangman’s noose, Stheno is ready to rest on her laurels. She saved the mythic community from the terrible King Roberts, and that’s more than enough. But she doesn’t count on Roberts’s daughter Gloria showing up, intent on revenge and not knowing the real story about her father’s death. The new queen takes Stheno’s kids hostage, and says she’ll put them to death unless the gorgon agrees to be her errand girl and retrieve several magical items for her. Nothing big, she says, just a few tiny and inconsequential things here and there. Understandably suspicious of the tasks Queen Gloria is setting for her, Stheno attempts to gather her old crew back together—only to find that several have since “retired.” But when do the “bad guys” retire and completely vanish into thin air? It seems odd, and Stheno is determined to find out what happened to them. But she can’t go it alone, and the clock is still ticking against her kids being held hostage by the Queen. She puts together a new crew with a few of the old members hopping on board to race against the seconds counting down to find what Queen Gloria wants. But once she returns with the queen’s magical items, having faced timid half-gods and punchy phoenixes, she finds out the extent of what Gloria has planned: concocting a spell to end magic forever, thereby wiping out the entire population of the mythic community. Having handed the “good” queen the keys to their own destruction, now Stheno has to steal the items back before everyone she cares about is destroyed. Stheno's adventure continues! I'll catch you at the end of the week to see... can I keep the momentum going? Until then, have a great week! I'll be posting my final wordcount soon, but I've gotten over the finish line and written over 40k words AGAIN this week. I'm still working on the last chapters to complete the book, and I'm racing to finish it before the clock strikes midnight. WILL I DO IT, FOLKS??? You'll have to check in to see. :) Here's an excerpt of me reading from my new book, which is a fun fantasy romp with crazy mythological characters: Tomorrow, I'll keep right on going in the series to write book 2 in Stheno's world, so stay tuned! Until then, have a great weekend. :) |
