Week 15 - Psychological Horror

This week was a late start to writing my new novel, but I've finally put some words on the page. It's called Graphic and it's a psychological horror. Here's what it's all about:

Malik is a freelance website designer in his senior year in high school, and he’s well on his way to building his own successful company when he graduates. However, he gets a client who’s more than he bargained for—someone who wants him to post explicit, gory photos on a new website. He’s fine with it until the police show up at his door and tell him he’s been posting photos of actual murders that have been taking place in town. He’s shocked and had no idea that they weren’t just CG.

But then the photos start to become recognizable people he knows: the barista he gets his coffee from, a teacher in his school. With no explanation—and, unfortunately, no electronic trail, since everything gets wiped as soon as he receives it—he’s the main suspect of the police.

As the pressure dials up and the murders get closer to home, the clues the killer is leaving him are all pointing in one direction. Malik is in a race against the clock to discover the killer’s identity—because it’s only a matter of time until the next photo is of him.

Okay, I've got some catch-up to do today, so I'm off to write. I'll be back on Sunday to read an excerpt from my new novel - have a great week!

Novel Extinguished!

The title of this post sounds like I killed the book, LOL. And I did! Week 14 is in the bag - I just wasn't able to post my usual Sunday excerpt video last night because I was away from home. I got back home this afternoon and read my excerpt from last week. Here it is:

I just want to add that I found the timing of my book pretty coincidental with the big fire in Jasper, Alberta - it wasn't intentional, since it's the third book of a trilogy and I started writing the trilogy three weeks ago. The Jasper fire has been a story that's resonated with a number of residents of Alberta, as well as others who've visited Jasper as a tourist destination. My heart goes out to all the residents of the town.

I'm out of town this weekend taking my daughter to an art event, so I'm not going to record my usual excerpt from my book today. I've crossed the finish line of 40k words, though, and will be heading back home early Monday afternoon. So, expect the video tomorrow evening. Sorry for the delay!

Week 14 - Contemporary Romance (Book 3)

I'm off to an early start this week with the final book of my contemporary romance trilogy, called From the Ashes of Love. It's a bit of a tear-jerker romance because of the hard road the couple has taken individually in order to find each other, so be prepared. But it'll be completely worth the journey in the end. Here's what it's all about:

Harrison “Lucky” Peterson is burned out from his firefighting job—literally. He was badly burned in the recent BC fires and had to take a break to heal and recover. However, even though he’s getting back on his feet, he can’t escape the nightmares he carries with him from when he was trapped and thought he was going to die. And the nightmares are only getting worse.

His old boss and friend recommends he go to a therapy retreat in the small town of Bobbins in Alberta, run at the local inn every year. He decides to give it a try. While there, he meets another attendee—a woman who is also struggling with PTSD from her years overseas as a soldier in Afghanistan. Through their shared trauma, will they make a connection stronger than their pain?

The timing of this book seems pretty appropriate, considering that the fires have flared to life again in BC with this heat wave we're having up in Western Canada. Unfortunately, there are many firefighters right now battling the blazes once again and putting their lives at risk. My thoughts go out to them!

I'll be back on Sunday to read an excerpt from my new novel. Hope you stay cool during this heat wave!

Week 13 - Contemporary Romance (Book 2)

Romance is being cooked up this week in book 2 in The Mystery Chef. A single mom with secrets... what could possibly go wrong? Here's what the story's all about:

Katie Donaldson has lived in Bobbins, Alberta her whole life. The only time she’s ever left was to go to university, and she never finished—instead, she came back pregnant and alone. In the eight years since, Katie has worked hard to launch her home catering business. She supplies the local inn and the senior center, as well as working at local weddings and other events.

Her big secret is that she’s a masked Instagram influencer, which helps pay the bills—she’s the Mystery Chef. As her popularity grows, more people online try to figure out her real identity, but she’s relatively safe from discovery in her small hometown. When a reporter arrives, intent on finding out who she is, she’s surprised when the sparks fly between them. As they get to know each other, will the secrets they each have bring them closer together—or tear them apart?

Come back on Sunday to see how Katie can escape getting outed when I read an excerpt from my new novel. Have a great week, everyone!

Happy Ever After

7/14/2024

Miriam and Jon have found their happy ever after... and so have I, as I bring another book to a close. This week was a bit of a struggle with writing as I juggled a few non-writing things. Nothing terrible at all - for example, I was happy to go visit Art Walk in Edmonton, which had a lot of fabulous artists on display, including my aunt Linda's work. You'll be seeing more of her artwork soon, since she's one of the artists whose fabulous artwork will be on the covers of several of my books.

In fact, the plan is to have her work grace the covers of the trilogy I'm writing this week and the next two weeks. I'm very excited to be working with her! It's always fun to do a family project like this.

Speaking of books coming to a close, here's an excerpt from this week's novel The Art of Love:

Next week, I'll be tackling book 2 in the series with a brand new couple in the small town of Bobbins. Tune in tomorrow to find out who might be on the path to finding true love. Until then, hope you have a great night!
